It may be somewhat oxymoronic, but in Santa Monica, California, a “green” parking structure may be constructed soon. The structure, which provides 900 parking spaces (14 which are specifically for electric vehicles), is the first LEED Certified parking structure in the United States. To encourage alternative forms of transportation, the structure includes free bicycle storage.
The Santa Monica Civic Center parking structure has a solar panel configuration on the roof that meets all of the buildings energy requirements. Not only is the structure energy efficient, it also contains other environmentally conscience features such as a storm drain water treatment plant, recycled construction materials, low-VOC paints and coatings, low-e glazing for heating and cooling efficiency, and an energy efficient mechanical system. The Glass Association of North America has awarded the firm who designed the parking lot for their use of laminated glass panels.
